This guide covers all the essentials - from the best time of year for whale sightings to what to bring on board. Dive in and get ready to experience an unforgettable adventure with Whale Watching Perth as you witness one of nature's most awe-inspiring migrations right along our coastline!

What is the best time of year for whale watching?

Our whale watching seasons kick off on late August and run until around mid-November. During this period, humpback whales head back down to Antarctica after making their migration up the Western Australian to warmer waters for breeding and calving.

When should I arrive?

We recommend arriving at least an hour before departure to ensure a smooth start to your adventure. Arriving early allows you extra time to check in, find parking, and settle in without any last-minute rush.

Where?

Check in with our reservation staff at our ticketing counter for Rottnest Fast Ferries, you’ll see our Whale Watching Perth flags out front to help you find your way.

When does it run?

Our tours operate every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:30pm. Boarding commences 15 minutes prior and we adhere to a very strict schedule. Keep an eye on our social media for any additional updates!

What types of whales can I expect to see?

During the whale watching season, humpback whales are often the most sighted species. Humpback whales are a joy to watch as they often breach, slap their tails and engage in other playful behaviours.

How long does the tour last?

Approximately 2 hours, allowing ample time for spotting whales and enjoying the surrounding scenery.

Are the tours suitable for children and families?

Yes, our family-friendly tours welcome guests of all ages, offering engaging commentary and comfortable seating to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

What should I bring on the tour?

We recommend bringing a jacket, as it can get quite windy on board, sunglasses to shield from the glare and maximise your viewing experience and a camera, to capture all the incredible whale moments!

What if I don’t see any whales during the tour?

If on any tour whales are NOT sighted, passengers are entitled to join us again free of charge. The return trip must be within the same whale season (late August – November). If travel is in the last two weeks of the season, you may re-book for the next season.

What should I do if I get seasick?

If you are prone to seasickness, consider taking medication before the tour. It can also help to stay on the outside decks, focus on the horizon and avoid heavy meals prior to boarding.

Can I take photos during the tour?

Absolutely! Bringing a camera is recommended, and many guests love capturing the beautiful sights and memorable moments during the tour. We also encourage guests to post their content and tag us, so we can see and maybe even repost it!

Our ferry is equipped with a bar and restrooms, with live educational commentary provided by marine scientists. The vessel is wheelchair accessible and there is a shaded area with seating available inside and out. The bow and stern are also opened to the public for maximum whale spotting.

Are food and drinks provided on the tour?

A snack bar is available on board where you can purchase food and drinks. However, we recommend eating before you board, as only snacks are offered during the trip. You’re also welcome to bring your own food!
